Famous Families
The Kardashian-Jenners, the Smiths, Blue Ivy, and why everyone suddenly started saying ‘nepo baby’.
The Kardashian-Jenners
The most famous family in pop culture started with a court case. Robert Kardashian, Kim’s dad, was part of O.J. Simpson’s defense team at the 1995 trial.
- 2007: Keeping Up with the Kardashians premieres on E!. It runs for 20 seasons until 2021, then the family moves to Hulu with The Kardashians in 2022.
- Kris Jenner, the "momager", runs the business side.
- The daughters turned fame into brands: Kim’s shapewear brand SKIMS, Kylie’s Kylie Cosmetics, Khloé’s Good American, plus Kendall as a top model.
- Kim even started studying law and passed California’s "baby bar" exam for first-year law students in 2021.
The Smiths
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s kids grew up famous too. Jaden starred in The Karate Kid (2010) and makes music. Willow released "Whip My Hair" at 9, then grew into an alt-rock and R&B artist.
The Knowles-Carters
Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter, won a Grammy at 9 (for the "Brown Skin Girl" video). She later danced on stage on Beyoncé’s 2023 Renaissance tour.
The nepo baby debate
In December 2022, New York magazine ran a cover on "the year of the nepo baby": actors and musicians with famous parents, like Zoë Kravitz, Maya Hawke, Lily-Rose Depp, Dakota Johnson and Gracie Abrams. "Nepo baby" (short for nepotism baby) became everyday slang, and every famous kid now gets asked about it.
